Rebuild Philosophy

Each project (Spitfire) is completely stripped and painstakingly rebuilt to ‘zero-time’ condition, using original parts where possible. Replacement parts are either sourced or manufactured as necessary. Engines are rebuilt by Universal Airmotive of Chicago, USA.

HFL is a CAA-approved engineering organisation and has developed and introduced a number of inspection, repair and maintenance procedures which are becoming ‘industry standard’.

At Historic Flying we believe that aircraft restoration is no longer a question of ‘keeping it flying’. We restore aircraft to zero-time condition, and intend to preserve the skills to do so. If we don’t, those special skills will simply become extinct. We’re working to introduce formal accredited training schemes in association with training deliverers in the public and private sector.

We work to a philosophy of:
-zero defects
-right first time
and we believe in a policy of continuous improvement.

We refuse to compromise on quality and thus protect our customers and their investment by:
-minimising flying risks
-protecting against corrosion
-preserving authenticity
-enhancing the finish
-integrating the necessary modern NavCom equipment in the cockpit, such that it is functionally and ergonomically correct, without disturbing the authenticity of the aircraft.
